As part of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, the Grand Traverse Area LBPH was the first subregional established in Michigan, in 1972. It serves 16 counties in the Grand Traverse Area and is one of only 11 Subregional Libraries in Michigan.

Anyone unable to read ordinary printed materials because of visual or physical limitations may be eligible. Currently the LBPH serves 800+ patrons, circulating nearly 48,000 items per year!

A wide variety of  unabridged titles recorded on cassette tape are available by phone or walk-in access. Catalogs of titles are provided and cassette machines are available on loan for those patrons who meet specific criteria. Braille books are available through or Regional Library in Lansing.


Who is Served?...

Part of a state and national network, the subregional Grand Traverse Area Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped serves residents of Antrim...Benzie...Crawford...Grand Traverse... Kalkaska...Lake...Leelanau...Manistee...Mason...Mecosta...Missaukee... Newago...Oceana... Osceola...Roscommon...and Wexford Counties.

Who is eligible?...

Anyone who is unable to read or use ordinary printed materials because of physical limitations may use the library service. In addition to blindness and other visual limitations, physical handicaps include disabilities which make the holding of books impossible or so difficult as to keep the individual from reading. Examples of such handicaps include: loss of arms or the use of arms; impairment of muscle and nerve control; the effects of strokes, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, polio, severe, arthritis. Persons unable to read because of severe learning disabilities which are physically caused are also eligible. Those whose physical limitation are temporarily (likely to diminish with treatment or corrective surgery) are eligible for the duration of their disability.

Who pays...

The subregional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped is funded jointly by the federal, state and local governments through your tax dollars. Materials, equipment and services are provided to eligible patrons without charge. Materials and equipment are mailed to and from the patron postage-free.

How to apply...

An application from may be requested from the GTA Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. The Certificate of Eligibility confirms that the applicant is unable to read or use ordinary printed material because of a particular physical limitation. This statement form must be signed by a competent authority - a member of the medical or allied professions, professional persons in the fields of public health, education. library service, rehabilitation, social work and public welfare.
